Girls, my hCG is elevated despite normal ultrasound results. We were referred for genetic consultation, after which we will decide whether a placental biopsy will be done. Has anyone had this experience? Overall feeling excellent, no swelling, no headaches, good appetite.

I had my first screening at 13 weeks — it showed slightly elevated MoM and HCG, and the ultrasound showed the uterus was tense, the cervix short, and I urgently needed bed rest. No stress, they prescribed Utrogestan, Duphaston, Magnesium B6, Riabal, Nohsha suppositories and vitamins — I switched from Elevit to Premama Duo. I felt better, my belly wasn’t so tight. I took the meds for 2 weeks and got better. The ultrasound after that showed everything was fine. At 17 weeks I started feeling unwell and decided to repeat the HCG and MoM (I never begrudge money for these things). I did it and it showed elevated again — I freaked myself out, read a lot ? and couldn’t sit still one night. The doctor was on vacation. I barely reached her and sent the tests on Viber. She explained that it’s not a problem with the baby, not some congenital stuff — the ultrasound is good, the nose, the nuchal area, etc. — but HCG and MoM are elevated because there’s a threat of pregnancy loss, a lack of progesterone, and the cervix has shortened; if it doesn’t change they’ll have to put in a pessary. She prescribed treatment: Progynorm Ovo orally, Progynorm Gesta (basal), Duphaston, Riabal, magnesium, homeopathic suppositories Viburcol and bed rest. That’s what I did — I took them and rested for 3 weeks, then went for an ultrasound: everything was fine with the baby, the cervix returned to normal, the threat passed. I stopped worrying about that HCG and MoM — I’ll check it on the third screening. My advice to you: don’t worry, don’t be nervous. When I saw the sonographer and told him my blood tests showed elevated results, he said: “You know, a mother will always worry; every body reacts differently to the fetus, and if you take every measurement on ultrasound down to the millimeter — nuchal translucency, bones, etc. — you’d see how many unborn babies there would be” ? I said I was even thinking of going to a geneticist and doing amniocentesis or a biopsy. He smiled and said: “Medicine is a business unfortunately, and many doctors get kickbacks by dealing with those genetic clinics, and in the end how many little lives are harmed — it’s not simple to poke and take a biopsy, and sometimes they accidentally poke the baby a bit,” etc. And you know, I really calmed down. Everything will be fine ?

Евгения, Are you on Progynorm Gesta as a baseline? It should be used vaginally. And why get tests done at 17 weeks — they’re not effective at that stage; you just wasted money. Enjoy your pregnancy.

And to you too ?❤ Recently I was talking with a mom about this, and she said her MoM and hCG were also elevated; when she and her husband found out they were stunned — everyone in the family is normal — and they were sent to a geneticist who ordered a biopsy. Twice they couldn't go for various reasons: the car wouldn't start, then her husband couldn't come back from a trip... and it's all nerves, you kind of understand that the mosaicism doesn't add up and something seems to be holding you back, but you understand the seriousness, and in the end she snapped and went through with the procedure. They did everything, it went fine with no problems. It cost quite a bit, but in moments like that you don't think about it. The conclusion was that everything is fine and the child is now 5 years old — an active, smart, handsome little boy. Wishing you health and take care of yourself; I also recommend going to a competent doctor so they can review and put everything together — the ultrasound and the tests.

I was also sent to a geneticist; she said the increase was due to morning sickness and because I weigh 45 kg at a height of 170 cm.
