Ideally, you are supposed to take folic acid 3months before getting pregnant and 3months in. They are the most important time to take folic acid. Then all through your pregnancy. So, yes you can start immediately you get pregnant even without doctor's prescription as long as you are not allergic to it and can tolerate it.
