Good afternoon, I'm 15 weeks and 2 days, I've had a urine test three times and they find protein. Doctors are scaring me, saying it's bad and referred me to the maternity hospital for a consultation. Has anyone else had this? Should I really be afraid? I don't have swelling, nothing is bothering me.

Hi! I understand the worry — it’s nothing catastrophic, I’ll try to be brief and to the point. What can cause protein in the urine during pregnancy: - contamination of the sample or inadequate cleaning/collection; - urinary tract infection; - temporary (e.g., after exertion or dehydration) or orthostatic proteinuria; - chronic kidney disease; - preeclampsia — but it usually develops after 20 weeks (rarely earlier, except in specific situations). Why a referral to the maternity hospital makes sense: the cause needs to be clarified. They usually order: a repeat clean urine collection (first morning, midstream), urinalysis + culture, a protein/creatinine ratio or 24‑hour collection, blood pressure measurement and blood tests (kidney function, liver tests — as indicated). What you can do now: - collect only the midstream portion of the first morning urine into a clean container; - ask the doctor whether they will order a test for infection and a protein/creatinine ratio; - bring your medical history to the consultation (hypertension, kidney disease). When to seek urgent care: - high blood pressure, severe swelling, severe headache, visual disturbances, abdominal pain — if any of these symptoms appear, see a doctor immediately. Overall — the presence of protein needs clarification, but it’s not necessarily a serious problem. It’s good you were referred for consultation.
