Hello, my child is 2 months old and cannot have a bowel movement on their own. Duphalac did not help. I wait 10 days, then I have to use Microlax. After Microlax, the baby does have a bowel movement, but not much for 10 days. Has anyone had a similar experience?

First, it is advisable to consult a pediatrician for consultation and diagnosis of the cause of constipation in your child. There may be other treatment methods or recommendations that can help your little one. You should not continue using micro-enemas without consulting a specialist, as this can be dangerous for the child's health.

I consulted different pediatricians, and no one prescribes anything other than Duphalac and enemas as a last resort.

Yekaterina , The child can get used to having enemas administered and not having to strain.

Катя Та , Enemas are only for extreme cases when absolutely nothing else helps; I use them after 10 days.

How does the child feel about it? Initially, before Duphalac, was he restless? Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding? Introduce warm filtered water, starting with half a teaspoon and gradually increase it a little. Constipation is often due to a lack of water. But since your baby is very young, it might be that everything is being absorbed by the body and therefore there's nothing to excrete. This is normal. Consider visiting a good private pediatrician.

Катя Та , We are on gluten-free diet, the child feels satisfactory. I gave Duphalac for a week, apart from severe bloating nothing happened. We visited private pediatricians, they prescribed probiotics and Duphalac, and also recommended tummy massages, I give water too.

Катя Та , Yes, I heard that it can be normal not to poop for up to 3 days because it's being absorbed, but 10 days seems like too much to me!?

Yekaterina , "Seven days, not three, on GV, if nothing bothers you, then it's normal. Maybe everything is fine and you are giving Duphalac and probiotics in vain if the child is not troubled by anything. A paid pediatrician does not mean a good pediatrician. Check the app for old topics, someone here recommended a good pediatrician in Almaty."

If you are breastfeeding, then weigh your child; if they haven't gained weight, it's likely that you have insufficient milk and they are not getting enough to eat, and all the milk is being absorbed by their body, resulting in no stools. At least that was the case for me; my child didn't have a bowel movement for weeks, I thought it was constipation, and they didn't gain weight over a month. It turned out I didn't have enough milk and we switched to mixed feeding.

Айжан , We weigh ourselves regularly, he is even gaining more than the norm, at 2 months old he was already 6 kg.

He also couldn't walk, and it seemed like he had colic at that time. I gave him Bobotik, but it made him unable to go to the toilet, so then I gave him dill water, and after that, he went very well. Then we started introducing solid foods, and for about 4 days he couldn't go to the bathroom. I gave him prunes, and within about 10 minutes everything was done. There was one incident when Duphalac also didn't help; they said to drink it on an empty stomach for 7 days. By the second to last day, the child just couldn't drink it anymore, I felt sorry for him, and there was still no effect (it only helped for about 3 days). We went to visit relatives, and by the fifth day, my son still couldn't go to the bathroom. The doctor simply said to continue taking Duphalac or use suppositories. There were no suppositories available, and no tubes either. My aunt had raised twins and used the same method 25 years ago, and please NO JUDGMENTS!!! She just inserted a thermometer, and everything started moving, and a lot came out. For me, using a thermometer is an emergency measure when there's absolutely nothing else available. When a child tries but can't manage, and also cries a lot, it helped, but I still don't recommend it; it's very scary (what if the thermometer breaks, that's what I was worried about, but my aunt did everything carefully).

I wrote to you based on my experience. But if the child is gaining weight well and nothing is bothering him, then most likely the milk is being digested by the body.
