Girls, I'm at 1 trimester and my sugar is 5.5. They say this is very bad. We sent it to an endocrinologist. But friends say that such sugar can happen in pregnant women, nothing serious. Has this happened to you?

Retake the test yourself — just don't eat anything containing sugar for 24 hours. It happened to my sister; the midwife, to avoid sending her from doctor to doctor, suggested it, and now we only do it that way.

You should be scheduled for an additional sugar test.

They should take a repeat test. And when you had your blood sugar test, did they take your blood three times at one-hour intervals after you drank glucose, or did they do just a single draw?

Екатерина, I took it once — it was high. Two days later they told me to retake it, it was high again. And that's it. They sent me to an endocrinologist right away.

Екатерина, Actually it's strange... Both my parents have diabetes and they thoroughly tested my blood sugar just in case... But they ran several DIFFERENT blood sugar tests at once... Maybe doctors in your city follow different guidelines....

Same situation. Except that for me the doctors have already moved on to insulin. And they took a blood test once on an empty stomach and vsp

Well, 5.5 isn't high at all. Go see an endocrinologist, I don't think it's anything serious!

Татьяна, 5.5 is high blood sugar for a pregnant woman, but for a regular person it's a good result

I had a situation similar to yours — it's most likely just a blood sugar spike; it can happen not only from sweets, as people tend to think. I was sent to an endocrinologist, and because some blood tests got lost, I ended up with one result: the conclusion was gestational diabetes. At first I was upset — what diabetes?! Then I took a repeat blood sugar test and it was normal. So, girl, don't worry; take a repeat test, and with two results you should see an endocrinologist.

You need to take it on an empty stomach, then eat, and try again in two hours.

I've had this blood sugar level my whole pregnancy. Once it dropped after a stressful situation. Because of that I couldn't take the glucose tolerance test at 20 weeks since it was a bit above normal. Instead I had a glycated hemoglobin test, which showed that the sugar is breaking down normally. Just monitor it with tests, and 5.5 isn't very high. The main thing is that it doesn't rise, as I was told.

If blood sugar exceeds 5.1 fasting or is over 7.0 an hour after eating, pregnant women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes. They're put on a diet and have to measure blood sugar four times a day, plus keep a diary. Normally 5.5 is the norm for a person... but everything's different for us?

To be honest, at that stage I didn't take the sugar test...

At this stage 5.7. They flagged me as at risk for GDM. They told me to see an endocrinologist closer to 16 weeks; I went and had glucose and glycated hemoglobin tests — everything was normal, the risk was removed. I had the next blood test around week 28; my glucose was normal.
