Girls, since the first weeks of pregnancy I've been suffering from a terrible bitter taste in my mouth, like having a bitter medicine in my mouth all the time. Nothing helps. Has anyone experienced this and found anything that helped?

Bitterness in the mouth from the first weeks can be very exhausting, especially when it’s constant, like the taste of medicine. During pregnancy this often happens because of hormones: food and acid are more easily refluxed from the stomach, sometimes bile is involved, and bitterness can also be increased by vitamins or iron supplements if you’ve already started them. Try eating small portions, not lying down for 2–3 hours after eating, and temporarily cutting out fatty and fried foods, coffee, sour foods and mint. If you have pain under the right ribs, vomiting, fever, yellowing of the skin or dark urine — don’t wait and see an obstetrician-gynecologist; liver function tests and an ultrasound may be needed.
