I can’t accept the baby’s sex. At 19 weeks the ultrasound doctor said it will be a girl. Now 20 weeks, and all this time I’ve been in a terrible state. I can’t accept the baby’s sex. I dreamed of a son. I understand that it’s impossible to plan a baby’s sex without IVF. My husband is upset too, not as much as I am of course. This is my first child, I wasn’t planning to have more children, I don’t know what to do. Maybe I should see a specialist for psychological help?

This is very painful — it’s normal to grieve if you were hoping for a son. Your feelings are valid. Briefly, what might help: - Allow yourself to mourn the loss of expectations: cry, write your thoughts in a journal, talk with a close friend. - Talk openly with your husband: how he feels, what you need from each other right now. You can go together to a family therapist. - Try to start bonding with the little one: imagine her, talk to your belly, choose toys/names — sometimes this changes feelings over time. - Consider a perinatal psychologist or a psychologist/psychotherapist — they know techniques for acceptance and working through grief. There are online consultations if that’s convenient. - If you feel you can’t cope: constant apathy, thoughts of harming yourself or the baby, severe panic — be sure to contact a doctor or emergency services. Would you like me to help phrase what to say to your husband, or point you to where to find a perinatal psychologist online?
