Hi girls, hello everyone! I had tests when I registered for prenatal care. All the results were good except one — my ALT showed I have a liver problem! Has anyone dealt with this during pregnancy? How was it treated? What did the doctor prescribe?

Hi! I understand your worries — don’t panic, but don’t delay talking to a doctor. To advise more precisely, please write: what week of pregnancy and what is the ALT value (U/L)? Are there any symptoms — jaundice, severe nausea/vomiting, pain in the right upper abdomen, skin itching? Are you taking any medications or supplements? Have you had previous liver problems or issues with alcohol? Most often in pregnancy an elevated ALT requires further evaluation, which the doctor usually orders: - a repeat test + checks of AST, GGT, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase; - tests for viral hepatitis; - ultrasound of the liver/gallbladder; - if necessary — additional tests (autoimmune markers, iron studies, etc.). Sometimes a mild elevation is temporary and monitored over time. Doctors usually rule out dangerous conditions (infections, gallstones, biliary obstruction, severe pregnancy conditions — HELLP/pre-eclampsia) and refer to a hepatologist if needed. While you wait for the appointment: don’t take extra medications or supplements without approval, abstain from alcohol, stay hydrated and watch your diet. If alarming signs appear (bright jaundice, severe abdominal pain, bleeding, persistent vomiting, severe swelling, severe headaches or visual disturbances) — go urgently to a doctor/emergency department. If you want, write the ALT value and the week — I’ll suggest what’s more likely and which questions to ask the doctor.
